Steam Pump Ranch

Photo of the Steam Pump Ranch grounds in 2013

Residents of the Santa Cruz Valley in Southern Arizona, generally perceive the Town of Oro Valley as a vigorous young community, but in reality, it has a real and deep history in this region. The Steam Pump Ranch represents a living piece of that history.

Reserve Steam Pump Ranch for your next special event.

The Town of Oro Valley and its partner, Pima County, have provided residents and visitors an exciting window into the past, with the historic preservation of Steam Pump Ranch. Steam Pump Ranch has been added to Honey Bee Village and Catalina State Park to establish its proper place in the unfolding history of Southern Arizona.

Regularly scheduled events at Steam Pump Ranch

  • Oro Valley Farmers Market
Open to the public Saturday mornings.
  • Second Saturdays at Steam Pump Ranch
In the spring of 2013 the Parks and Recreation department introduced a new program called Second Saturdays at Steam Pump Ranch. This program was designed to bring awareness to the Town’s only historic property, Steam Pump Ranch. Since being purchased by the Town in 2008, the 16-acre property has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Ranch buildings have undergone significant rehabilitation for public access. The first Second Saturday events offered Town staff-led tours of the buildings and property, a children’s craft, and short talks in the Ranch’s historic garden re-creation.

In the fall of 2013, the Second Saturdays program was greatly expanded through the efforts of the Town, its new partners and a cadre of volunteers. The Oro Valley Historical Society began offering formal tours of the property on those Saturday mornings. Public speakers began presenting talks on the history and culture of the area, coordinated by the Society and Town staff. The Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance (SAACA) began leading public art tours from the Ranch on those dates. In addition, educational activities at the Ranch’s historic garden incorporated both adult and children’s activities and crafts. Regional musicians were also recruited to provide entertainment to guests. In October 2013, the Oro Valley Farmer’s Market was moved from Town Hall to the Ranch, and an Artisan’s Market was added. All of these activities have greatly expanded the attendance at the Second Saturdays events. More importantly, it has allowed for the expansion of the department’s cultural programming in a unique venue.
