Home Safety

What to do at home

  • Supervise your children and have self closing gates to the pool
  • CLOSE your garage door, yes...even in Oro Valley
  • Lock ALL doors to your house
  • Lock your windows - do not leave on night latch
  • If you have an alarm, set it
  • Perform a Home Security Survey
  • Keep watch on all workers in and around your home
  • If solicited over the phone, the internet or the mail, do not give out personal information unless you know who you are dealing with
  • Get involved in your neighborhood.  Know your neighbors and their vehicles
  • Report suspicious activity
  • Drive with your vehicle doors locked and be aware of your surroundings
  • Learn basic self defense techniques to build confidence in the event you need to defend yourself or a member of your family
  • If you are being followed in your vehicle, proceed to the nearest lighted area or police NOT drive directly to your home
  • Attempt to obtain a license plate number, if possible
  • Keep the perimeter of your home well lighted. Installing low voltage outdoor lighting is a cost-effective way to discourage intruders, as well as highlight a house
  • Never leave clues that you are away on a trip. Have a trusted neighbor collect mail and newspapers while you are away so delivered items do not accumulate
  • Never leave a message on your telephone answering machine telling people that you are away from home
  • Keep shrubbery trimmed away from entrances and walkways and windows. While large, ornate hedges may be beautiful, they also provide a hiding place for burglars who need only a minute to break in through a window or door.
