Professional Development & Training

Police Career Opportunities

Professional Development and Training ensures we provide the most efficient and effective public safety service to the community in support of a community policing philosophy. OVPD trains to a level required to meet community expectations and maintain professional certifications. Training is designed and administered to eliminate injuries, reduce liabilities and avoid litigation.

It is also responsible for the coordination, maintenance and management of training for all department personnel. Members of the Department regularly receive training in a wide variety of subjects including, but not limited to firearms, defensive tactics, emergency vehicle operations, law/legal update, OSHA, domestic violence and crime scene management. Training is conducted not only by instructors of the Oro Valley Police Department but also by qualified instructors from other agencies, private vendors and satellite programs.

Professional Development and Training is responsible for new officer orientation designed to prepare new officers for the stresses of attending the police academy, along with orienting them to the community and Town of Oro Valley. Lateral officer orientation is administered to provide lateral officers with the information to work, train and provide service uniquely to the citizens of the community.

The Field Training Officer Program is a critical function administered by Professional Development and Training to transition a new officer to a level where they are able to demonstrate required knowledge and proficiencies.

The Oro Valley Citizen Academy and Teen Academy are important community communication links that are successfully completed due to the efforts of Professional Development and Training. It works to maintain regional, state and national relationships enhancing our abilities to provide dynamic state of the art training opportunities in the delivery of public safety service.
