Former Student Brought Gun to Canyon del Oro High School
Published on April 11, 2019
On April 11, 2019 at approximately 3:30 p.m., Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD) received a report from Canyon del Oro (CDO) High School administrators reference a possible threat to the school. The initial report was a student had flashed a gun on campus about an hour prior to the report. The reporting party did not know the location of the suspected student.
While the majority of students had left for the day, there were still many students and faculty onsite. CDO administration initiated a school lockdown. OVPD responded and began searching the school in case the suspect was still on scene.
The suspect has been identified and he is a former CDO student, however he is not in custody at this time. A video of the student showing off a gun in his waistband was captured on Snapchat and it appears the student was in a CDO parking lot. No direct threat was made to the school and the suspect was not in the secure area of the school.
We would like to commend CDO administrators for taking decisive action and initiating a lockdown. In an abundance of precaution, OVPD will have extra officers on site at CDO tomorrow.
