Thank you for your interest in the Town of Oro Valley election process and running for Town Council. The information below contains relevant information related to running for Town Council. The Town Clerk’s Office requests that interested candidates call the Town Clerk at (520)229-4741 or email mstandish@orovalleyaz.gov to schedule an appointment to receive and review the Candidate Handbook, however it is the Candidate’s responsibility to ensure that all the legal requirements have been met and that his/her campaign complies with all applicable statutes and ordinances. Candidates should consult with an attorney for questions regarding their campaign, as Town staff cannot provide legal or financial advice.

There are three Councilmember seats up for election. Oro Valley candidates will run during the August 6, July 30, 2024, Primary Election (*Primary Election date moved to July 30, 2024, due to HB2785, signed into law on 2/9/24). Candidate(s) who receive a majority of votes cast in the Primary Election shall be declared elected. Compensation of elected officers of the town is set by resolution of the Council. The annual salary of the Mayor is $12,740 and the annual salary for Councilmembers is $10,058.

Eligibility to run for office, a candidate must: be 18 years of age, a United States citizen, an Arizona resident, and a qualified elector; currently reside within Oro Valley’s town limits and have resided within them or in an annexed area for at least one year preceding the election; be able to speak, write, and read the English language; not have been convicted of treason or a felony, unless civil rights have been restored; and not have been adjudicated as incapacitated.

Any candidate seeking office through the nomination petition process shall file a Statement of Interest(PDF, 197KB) form with the Town Clerk prior to obtaining any signatures on a candidate nomination petition. Upon the filing of the Statement of Interest and to become an official candidate for Council in the 2024 Primary Election, the following forms must be filed with the Town Clerk no sooner than 8:00 a.m., Saturday, March 9, March 2, 2024, and no later that 5:00 p.m., Monday, April 8, April 1, 2024.

· Nomination Petitions containing at least 465 but not more than 930 valid signatures

· Nomination Paper/Declaration of Qualification

· Local Public Officers Financial Disclosure Statement

Candidates running for county, city, town and precinct committeeman office in Arizona may collect 100% of their required nomination petition signature through the E-Qual system. E-Qual enables eligible voters to electronically sign these petitions. The Arizona Online Petition Portal allows candidates to create and manage their online nomination petitions for elections by participating jurisdictions. Before any signature is collected, a Statement of Interest form must be filed with the Town Clerk. Candidates who do not wish to use the E-Qual system can utilize the existing hard copy nomination petition process.

Placing political signs in Public Rights-Of-Ways is permitted if it is 71 days or less before the date of the Primary Election (May 27, May 20, 2024). Political signs must be located within one of the Temporary Sign Zones if it is more than 71 days before the date of the Primary Election. Signs placed in public rights-of-way cannot be in a location that is hazardous to public safety, obstruct the clear vision in the area or interfere with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
