Construction begins next week on Naranja Drive Multi-Use Path

ORO VALLEY, Ariz. (Nov. 12, 2025) – Construction of the Naranja Drive Multi-Use Path begins Monday, Nov. 17, along the north side of Naranja Drive between La Cañada Drive and First Avenue.
The long-awaited project, led by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and constructed by Granite Construction, is expected to continue through summer 2026. The 1.75-mile, 10-foot-wide paved path will enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists while connecting neighborhoods to Naranja Park, the Oro Valley Public Library and nearby businesses.
In preparation, digital message boards have been placed to notify drivers of upcoming shoulder work. Construction will occur primarily within the north shoulder.
To ensure a safe and efficient start, ADOT and the contractor recently conducted additional field verification and survey work prior to construction. This caused a short delay from the previously estimated start date, but no changes have been made to the project’s scope or overall completion goal.
We do not anticipate any lane closures for this project. Drivers are asked to use caution and slow down, watch for crews and equipment, and follow all posted signage in the area throughout construction.

Project funding
The Town of Oro Valley applied for federal funding in 2022 through the Pima Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Alternatives Grant (RTAG) program, ultimately securing $3.449 million in RTAG funds. An additional $208,930 in local Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) funding was also awarded. Together, these sources cover 91% of the total project cost.
The project was originally expected to be fully funded through $3.66 million in federal and regional transportation grants; however, following ADOT’s bid opening earlier this year, the total project cost rose to $3.99 million. The Town’s contribution of $341,000 (less than 9% of the total project cost) is funded through savings from other Town road projects in the fiscal year 2024/25 budget and will cover the remaining gap.
