Spotlight on Youth: Copper Creek Elementary School

At its June 17, 2015 Spotlight on Youth, Oro Valley Town Council recognized students from Jennifer Royer’s class at Copper Creek Elementary School.

June 18, 2015

Two years ago, these students thought it would be a good idea if Arizona had a state metal, and they thought that metal should be copper. They began a dialog with state lawmakers, and this year, Senate Bill 1441 was sponsored by State Senator Steve Smith. They then traveled to the Arizona State Capitol, where they testified during hearings on the bill, and Governor Doug Ducey signed it into law in March 2015.

These fourth-grade students, who won’t even be eligible to vote for many years, are already making an impact on local government and are now part of our state’s history.
