Oro Valley is a Playful City USA! text with KaBOOM! road sign and 2011-2016

The Town of Oro Valley has earned the "Playful City USA" designation from national non-profit KaBOOM! Playful City USA, presented by The Humana Foundation, is a national program advocating for local policies that increase play opportunities for children and is a key platform in combating the play deficit. This is Oro Valley’s sixth year receiving this designation (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015).

May 18, 2016

"This five-year, consecutive designation shows the Town of Oro Valley’s ongoing commitment to developing amenities and programs for our children,” said Mayor Satish Hiremath. “Whether it’s the Oro Valley Community Center, the Oro Valley Aquatic Center, one of our many parks, or the Children’s Museum Oro Valley—which came to fruition through a non-profit partnership—we are making sure our young people have safe places to play and learn.”

With research proving play is critical to the overall well-being of children, 257 cities and towns, including Oro Valley, earned recognition as 2016 Playful City USA communities for their efforts to give children the childhood they deserve by providing ample opportunities for play.

Criteria for Playful City USA designation include:

  • Significant collaboration among nonprofit partners, foundations, municipal agencies, the Mayor’s Office, business community and citizens
  • Municipal leadership on the cause of play
  • An ability and commitment to address inequity through infrastructure investment, policy change, and programming
  • Innovation that increases community playability

“We are thrilled to recognize these communities that have invested their time and efforts to put kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “Balanced and active play is crucial to the well-being of kids and the communities that they thrive in.  By integrating play into cities, the leaders of Playful Cities USA are working to attract and retain the thousands of families that want homes in close proximity to safe places to play.”
