Business Spotlight: Fruit Shack Smoothies & Yogurt

At Fruit Shack Smoothies & Yogurt, “we’re not selling junk food,” owner Yatin Parekh asserts. “It has to be healthy, and I have to believe in it.”

People believe in Fruit Shack. On a recent Monday afternoon, when the strip of businesses along First Avenue was a little slow, people lined up at Fruit Shack for handmade smoothies infused with their preferred supplements.

The crowd favorite, according to manager Tina Casadei, is the Signature Strawberry smoothie, composed of apple and guava juice, banana, non-fat frozen yogurt, raspberry sherbet and strawberries, infused with a guest’s preferred supplements.

“Most of our ingredients are fresh and organic, and very high quality,” Yatin said.  “I don’t want to sacrifice on the quality.”

Fruit Shack’s strength is smoothies, with supplemental vitamins, protein and components that fight weight and stress, or add energy. Guests can blend in whey protein, soy substitute, granola, Emergen-C, organic flax seed, raw almonds and sugar-free ice cream.

The Fruit Shack menu includes Berry’d Treasures, Citrus Sensations, Tropical Treats, Premium Blends, acai energy bowls, Veggie Smoothies,  and low-fat shakes, such as the scrumptious peanut butter chocolate banana shake Tina whipped up.  “People from the East Side drive over to try that,” Tina said.

“Our wheat grass shots are awesome,” Yatin adds.

Fruit Shack Smoothies & Yogurt also has a food truck, available for events, school functions and parties.

Yatin bought Fruit Shack just under a year ago from Jared and Jessica Burns. He knew the food business, owning the New Delhi Palace restaurant in Tucson as well as a TCBY yogurt franchise in Vancouver, B.C. He’s been splitting his time between the 2 communities, but wants more time in Tucson because his son Shiv, educated in both cities, is now a student at the University of Arizona.

Yatin Parekh is one Tucsonan who doesn’t mind summer’s heat. “The hotter the better” for business, he said.
