Paintings by Kathryn Gastelum

As an abstract painter, colorist, thinker and spiritual soul, I'm influenced mostly by our versicolored, awesome southwest skies and classic jazz music. As a Tucson native since '64, my passion is all about color and composition. I received a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Arizona and later studied Interior Design, becoming affiliated with A.S.I.D. as an Allied member.

Painting is my passion and it's imperative that I continue to work and evolve, to make my mark with harmonious tones and colors surrounding the canvas. My improvisation in color is my "visual jazz".

Simply finding beauty in everything and everywhere from desert calm or big city energy and brilliance, I believe color is intense and soul moving, like music. My paintings are created in the richness of oils, acrylics, encaustic fusion while vibrant, french dyes are the essence of my silk scarves. When painting expressively and with spontaneity, the most intriguing composition emerges and is then developed. In addition, when I pull myself back towards painting in realism, I connect with distant lands and with people in pensive, moments of reflection.

Color is imperative. Painting by soul intention draws me into creation of the painting. Most of all, knowing that the engaged viewer connects with my works as a meaningful piece of art is priceless.
