K-9 Unit

Canines Justin, Bruno and Emerson with their handlers

The K-9 Unit is responsible for handling searches for narcotics, people and bombs.  The K-9 teams participate in regular training exercises to maintain their high level of expertise in their specialized field.

Canine Justin is a seven-year-old male Belgian Malinois trained in explosive detection. Officers traveled to a vendor in Texas in October to find a replacement K-9 for the Police Department. After viewing several potential K-9’s, the vendor offered Justin as a temporary loaner dog. After several weeks of training, Justin showed he would be a perfect match for Oro Valley Police Department and Pima Regional Bomb Squad due to his great desire to work and personality. In January 2017, Justin was purchased by Oro Valley Police Department. Justin was previously deployed in Kuwait as a military contract dog. Canine Justin is handled by Lead Police Officer Marvin.

Canine Bruno joined OVPD in September 2013.  Bruno is male Belgian Malinois imported from Czechoslovakia.  Bruno is trained and nationally certified in patrol tactics and narcotics detection.  Canine Bruno is handled by Officer Reynolds.

Canine Emerson joined OVPD in May 2011. Emerson is a male Belgian Malinois who comes to OVPD via Mexico. Emerson is a dual purpose canine trained in patrol tactics and narcotic detection.  Emerson is also nationally certified in narcotics detection.  Canine Emerson is handled by Officer Peterson.
