Shop OV Spotlight: Jersey Mike's Subs

At Jersey Mike's Subs, you can get an East Coast-style sub sandwich, made to order with fresh meats, cheeses and produce on freshly baked bread, all topped with…The Juice.

That's what Jersey Mike's calls the red wine vinegar and olive oil mixture used to dress each sandwich. "We like to think of it as a mouth explosion," says Bob Gregory, franchisee of the Oro Valley store with his sister, Rosey, and Eddy Madden.

"We are 110 percent committed to serving very fresh, very healthy food," Bob said, "and we stand behind everything 110 percent."

Bob has a hard time picking his favorite sandwich. He's a fan of #13, the Original Italian. On the hot side, #17, the Philly Cheesesteak, always satisfies.

Bob Gregory is a newly satisfied career franchisee who spent more than 30 years with a major restaurant chain, and is about to open his 50th restaurant. The Oro Valley store opened Dec. 7, 2016. It has seating for 36 inside and 20 outside, with great views of Pusch Ridge. Pepsi products, bottled water and soft drinks, and fresh-brewed tea quench thirsts. Orders are phoned in, sent online or taken in person.

"Business is excellent," Bob said, "more than we expected."

These 3 years with Jersey Mike's have been "the most rewarding time of my career," Bob said, because of the "Jersey Mike's way of trying to make a difference in communities."

For its grand opening fund-raiser, Jersey Mike's / Oro Valley raised $5,000 for Canyon del Oro High School. It recently raised thousands of dollars for Ironwood Ridge High School. In March, local Jersey Mike's stores donated more than $16,000 to the children's hospital at Tucson Medical Center. Those local gifts are important to Gregory, in part because half the Oro Valley store's 16 employees are local high school students.

On a recent night shift, employees Jordan Wingo and Vanessa Miranda talked about the joy they find in the work. Beyond the food, and the customers, Jordan said, "we have amazing bosses. They connect with the employees."

"They're personal and hands on," Vanessa said. "They make sure we have everything we need."

"It's challenging at times, but it's fun," said Bob, about to celebrate his 61st birthday. "I've had a resurgence. I'm at a good place in my life."
