Shop OV Spotlight: Gaslight Music Hall

The Gaslight Music Hall wants to be "Oro Valley's home for fun," said Robert Shaw, producer and artistic director of this Gaslight Theater offspring.

In turn, the Gaslight Music Hall has found a home in Oro Valley.

"The thing I hear most often is ‘we're so glad you're here. We need this in Oro Valley,'" said Shaw.

The business, featuring regular concerts, music-based shows, a little theater, free popcorn and a from-scratch menu, has operated since February at Oracle and Rancho Vistoso.

Gaslight Music Hall has shows 5 nights a week now, with more planned in the new year. While guests tap their fingers, or dance, they can enjoy Grandma Tony's pizza, salad, sandwiches, wine, beer, cocktails and "our famous (Thrifty brand) ice cream desserts," to include sorbet, milkshakes and banana splits. Grandma Tony's Pizza has been voted the best in town. It's available for carry out or dining in when there's not a show.

It all makes for a fun, entertaining, local night out for couples, friends and families.

"We're scratching an itch that needed scratching," Shaw said. "It's very affirming."

There are no tickets to a Gaslight Music Hall show. "We'll seat you like a restaurant reservation," Shaw said. "It's a small touch, but people like that. You'll be warmly greeted at the hostess station. If I may be so bold, we have the best staff in the world." A work force of 20 mostly part-time employees brighten the experience.

Owner Tony Terry, who founded The Gaslight Theatre on Tucson's Eastside, and Shaw have created a warm, inviting space with wood-paneled walls, a stage of course, and comfortable seating for a deceptively large crowd. Dance parties should have The Gaslight rockin' on Fridays. Special events and private parties are welcome. Last summer, 2 kids' musical theater camps attracted 31 youngsters ("we would have been happy with 15," Shaw said) and an after-school fall camp is opening.

Summer was stronger than expected, with "a string of sellouts almost all summer long," Shaw said. "It was a very pleasant surprise."
