Business Spotlight: Fleet Feet Sports

Anne Stancil earned a Ph.D at the University of Wisconsin. Soon, though, she realized "being a professional academic was not where my heart was, not where my passion was."

Her heart, and her passion, resided in her feet.

June 20, 2016

A runner, she worked part-time at a Fleet Feet Sports store in Madison, helping people find just the right running and walking footwear. "I had no idea … how much you could impact someone with something as simple as fitting them with a good pair of shoes," Anne says. "I love it. I am helping people. I can share my enthusiasm. It's so much fun to help people reach the goals they have."

Anne began working part-time at Fleet Feet Sports' Tucson store 5-1/2 years ago. She became general manager, then purchased both stores in March from Pete and Jeanne Snell, who had opened the Oro Valley store in August 2013. Sales continue to grow.

Fleet Feet Sports' mission is to provide service and products for people who want to live well. "We help a lot of people," Anne said. "The majority are people trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle through running and walking. From kids to seniors."

The business offers shoe fitting services for running, walking, working or simply comfort. Inserts, both over-the-counter and fitted to the individual, are part of the solution. There's a treadmill, too, so staff can make a visual assessment of foot strike and make product recommendations. Fleet Feet sells fitted sports bras, high-quality socks, sandals, hydration and nutrition products, clothing, braces, compression sleeves, massage devices and more. Brands include Brooks, New Balance, Saucony and Asics, along with less-known brands like Hoka, Pearl Izumi, Mizuno and Alstra.

Fleet Feet Sports employs 15 people who work both stores. "You will not find a better customer experience anywhere," a proud Anne said. "Our staff is educated and knowledgeable. They know our products, and how to use them."

Owning the business has cut into Anne's running time. But it … fits. "It doesn't feel like work. I feel very, very lucky."
