Biography:
Salette Latas was elected in the March 2008 Primary with more votes than any candidate in Oro Valley’s history. A former member of the Oro Valley Historic Preservation Commission, Latas is currently a member of the Arroyo Grande negotiating team.
After graduating from the University of Arizona, she served in the United States Air Force as an air traffic controller, and subsequently worked as a technical writer and Web designer for large and small companies across the United States. Latas earned her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Arizona and her master’s in technical communication management from the Mercer University School of Engineering. She has served on the boards of several community associations, educational associations and non-profits. She also served as a volunteer guardian ad litem for abused and neglected children.
Latas currently designs Web sites and provides Internet business consulting for small businesses, non-profits and community organizations. A long-time advocate for animal welfare, she is the founder of the Pima Animal Welfare Society (http://www.pimaanimals.org) and currently shares her home with three rescued American Pit Bull Terriers: Penny, Bubba and Booger.
Her husband, Jeff, is a retired U.S. Air Force F-15 E pilot and is currently a captain with JetBlue Airways. She has one daughter, Virginia. Their son, Jesse, a graduate of Canyon del Oro High School, served in the United States Army at Camp Anaconda, Balad, Iraq, and died in 2007 at the age of 22.
Latas is a strong advocate for protecting natural and cultural resources. She supports economic development that focuses on locally owned, independent businesses and sustainable technology. She also supports the preservation of open space and historic sites. Latas believes that energy and water conservation are keys to sustainable development.
Latas welcomes and encourages citizen participation and is available for appointments at her constituents’ convenience. |
