Criminal Investigations Unit

Nesbitt, Dean
Sergeant Dean Nesbitt

The Oro Valley Criminal Investigations Unit is charged with investigating all major crimes that occur within the Town of Oro Valley and with followup investigations.

The organizational structure of the Unit includes: one (1) detective sergeant, four (4) detectives, one (1) investigator and one (1) crime analyst. The Criminal Investigations Unit is staffed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, each detective is subject to on-call status for a week, on a rotating basis. The "on-call" detective is notified by the detective sergeant of a call-out and responds to major crime scenes.

The Criminal Investigations Unit is required to assume responsibility where a followup investigation is required. Each detective is cross-trained to professionally investigate any type of criminal activity to which he/she may be assigned.

The Criminal Investigations Unit is the primary investigative arm of the Police Department. Investigations include all criminal activity that requires additional lengthy followup that would be restrictive to patrol officers in time or resources. Oro Valley detectives are required to investigate crimes against persons (crimes including homicides, rapes, assault, etc.) and crimes against property (burglaries, larcenies, forgeries, auto thefts, etc.).

The Crime Analyst is responsible for collecting, organizing and compiling criminal intelligence data for crime trend analysis. The Crime Analyst also conducts computer database searches, maintains departmental statistics and conducts presentations of crime data to commissioned law enforcement officers and other authorized groups.
