Bike Officers

There is currently one (1) sergeant and eleven (11) officers who have received special training to become police bike certified.  Bike officers further the Department's commitment to Community Based Policing by deployment in areas not readily accessible to motor vehicles or in areas requiring more personal contact between the officer and the public.

Officers who are bike trained perform all police functions with an emphasis on visibility and approachability and are currently assigned to patrol squads, SRO or CAT assignments.  Because bike officers are decentralized to squad assignments or other Departmental assignments, they are tactically supervised by those first line supervisors within those assignments.  Their special skills may require that they be available for varied work schedules.

A first line patrol supervisor is currently assigned to deal with administrative tasks involving bikes.  That assignment is administrative in nature and is responsible for coordination with all supervisors as it pertains to special deployments, policy, compliance and bicycle and uniform maintenance.  The administrative sergeant is responsible for periodic inspection of bikes and equipment.  A lieutenant is assigned to administratively command the use of bike officers, and set policy in the areas of training, uniform, personnel, selection and equipment procurement.

In addition to successful completion of a Department and International Police Mountain Bike Association approved Basic Bike School, officers assigned to bike duty are also subject to proficiency training quarterly.
