Bicycling in Oro Valley
The Town of Oro Valley first established a Bicycle and Pedestrian Program in 1999. Since then, the Plan has been revised on a biannual basis. The Town is committed to providing facilities, including bicycle facilities, that encourage the use of alternate modes of transportation.
Town staff works closely with neighboring jurisdictions to coordinate bicycle routes and facilities, in order to provide a regional, interconnected bicycling program that emphasizes education, enforcement, engineering and encouragement. The Eastern Pima County region, including the Town of Oro Valley, has received the prestigious "Gold" level Bicycle Friendly Community Award for 2006-2008 and 2008-2012 from the League of American Bicyclists.
The Town of Oro Valley currently has an extensive inventory of facilities for bicyclists, including bike routes, shared use paths, and multipurpose paved shoulders. There are 60.15 miles of signed bike routes, 36.1 miles of paved shoulders, and 14.9 miles of shared use paths. In addition, all new commercial facilities within the Town are required to have bicycle parking, as per the Town's Zoning Code.
Future projects with bicycle facilities include: the CDO Linear Park shared use path completion, as well as bike shoulders and paths along sections of Calle Concordia, Lambert Lane, La Cholla Boulevard and Tangerine Road.
In addition, the 40-mile route of El Tour de Tucson starts within the Oro Valley Town limits each November.
