Oro Valley is located in northern Pima County approximately six miles north of the Tucson city limits. The valley itself was formed by the Santa Cruz River joining Gold Creek in the Catalina Mountains. The town sits at an elevation of 2,620 feet, covers over 34 square miles and has a current population of nearly 44,000. Oro Valley was incorporated in April, 1974.

Oro Valley employs the council-manager form of municipal government. The Town is administered by a seven-member Town Council. The Town Council oversees all issues pertaining to Oro Valley, including residential and commercial development and preservation of natural areas.

Oro Valley residents elect six members of the Town Council. The Mayor is directly-elected while the Vice Mayor is selected by the Council from among the six Council members.
